Queenstown

Queenstown: jet boat and the gondola above Lake Wakatipu

A Queenstown day built around two things the town is known for: a jet boat ride through a river canyon with a licensed operator, and the gondola up to the viewpoint above Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables. It suits adventure and family channels, and longer tiers can add a lake cruise, a winery in the Gibbston Valley or a day in Arrowtown.

Why it films well

Speed and scale: spray and spins at water level, then the whole lake and mountain range from above. The contrast makes an easy two-part reel, and Queenstown's light changes fast enough that the same view looks different at noon and at sunset.

What the hosted activity covers

  • One jet boat ride with a licensed operator
  • Return gondola ride to the viewpoint
  • Private licensed vehicle for the day within the Queenstown area

Before you film

Shooting notes

Cameras on the boat
Jet boat operators set the rules for cameras and mounts, and you will get wet. Ask the operator in advance what can be mounted or held, and use a strap or a waterproof housing.
Drones
Queenstown Airport is in the middle of the basin and much of the area sits in controlled airspace, and nearby conservation land needs DOC permission. Assume no drone shots unless they are agreed in writing.
Safety briefings
Listen to every briefing and follow the crew. Operators set their own age, height and health rules for passengers, which matter if a companion or child joins.
Crowds and timing
Queenstown is busy in summer and in the ski season. Morning slots are quieter, and sunset at the gondola viewpoint is popular, so we book times in advance.
