Auckland
Auckland: Maungawhau / Mount Eden and the Waitematā Harbour
A first-morning plan for Auckland: the summit of Maungawhau / Mount Eden, a volcanic cone with views across the whole isthmus, then a ferry across the Waitematā Harbour from the downtown terminal. It suits arrival-day content, budget and family channels, and it explains in two hours why Auckland is built around water and volcanoes.
Why it films well
From the summit the city reads like a map: the Sky Tower, two harbours, other volcanic cones and the Hauraki Gulf islands on the horizon. The ferry then gives you movement, spray and the skyline from the water, which is the classic establishing shot for any New Zealand series.
What the hosted activity covers
- Private licensed vehicle from your hotel to Maungawhau and the ferry terminal
- A return harbour ferry crossing, as agreed in the itinerary
- A local guide for the morning, if agreed in the itinerary

Shooting notes
- Cultural significance
- Maungawhau is one of Auckland's tūpuna maunga (ancestral mountains), cared for by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority. Stay on the formed paths, keep to the rim and treat it as a significant place, not a backdrop for stunts.
- Drones
- Do not plan drone shots. Drone flying on the tūpuna maunga needs the Authority's prior approval and is not allowed inside the craters, and central Auckland sits under controlled airspace.
- Light and timing
- Go early: the summit is quieter and the light is softer, and the city is often clearer before the day warms up. Auckland weather changes quickly, so we keep the ferry flexible.
- Commercial filming
- Personal handheld filming is normal. A larger crew or kit on the maunga can need a filming permit, so tell us your kit list before the trip.
